Normal precautions should be taken as for any form of hiking. At the risk of sounding obvious, attention is drawn to the following:

  1. Check weather forecasts before setting off.

  2. Do not go alone.

  3. Tell someone of your intended route and expected time of return.

  4. Carry a small daysack with warm clothing, waterproofs, food and abundant water.

  5. Do not forget such simple items as: a sunhat, protective cream and sun glasses.

  6. Carry a mobile phone with fully-charged battery, a map and, if possible, a compass. They will rarely be used, but can be vital on occasion.

  7. Use the right equipment, especially footwear: trekking boots or similar are essential (avoid trainers or tennis shoes).

  8. Avoid straying from the marked paths and refrain from taking shortcuts.
