The Canary Islands are an archipelago
constituted by 7 islands and 6 rocky isles, located
in the Atlantic Ocean , about 100 Km from the African
coast. Its location is between the 28º and
the 29º, latitude North. This archipelago
embraces 7273 Km2 and shelters 1589403 inhabitants
(about 218.5 inhabitants/Km2). It is constituted
by 2 provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife , with the
islands of Tenerife , La Palma , La Gomera and
El Hierro; and Las Palmas , which includes Gran
Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura . The rocky
isles are Alegranza, La Graciosa, Montaña
Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Lobos.
The islands are settled on volcanic
accumulations which have emerged over the sea level.
Due to this reason, their morphology is typically
volcanic, with cones and craters, and fields covered
with lava and volcanic ashes, known as "malpaíses",
with cracks and sharp folds dotted about on them.
The relief of the Canary Islands is very rough, being
especially outstanding the Teide volcano, on Tenerife
, with its 3718 meters of altitude. Despite their
reduced area, most of the islands are characterized
by the elevated altitudes that culminate in their
very centre (except Lanzarote and Fuerteventura ),
from where a net of ravines descends. Their coasts
are also very sheer, abounding the sand beaches on
the eastern islands.
Due to their subtropical location,
the influence of the trade winds, or to their maritime
enclave, the Canary Islands possess a nice climate,
with soft contrasts from season to season or between
the day and nights: a spring-like climate.
